The lady who only gave her as Ataa and hails from the Ashanti region said her then boyfriend was her only source of livelihood so when he proposed, they entered into a blood covenant to assure him of her endless love, she obliged.
“I became pregnant after three months and when I went to the hospital for a regular checkup, I was told I had HIV..,” Ataa told Nhyira FM in an interview. The distraught woman said she tried to terminate the pregnancy to save the unborn twins troubles on earth. “I took several drugs to terminate the pregnancy but the fetus did not come and I couldn’t tell my mother for fear of being victimized”.
A confused Ataa stopped seeking ante-natal care until she gave birth to the twins for lack of money because the supposed boyfriend abandoned her. She has still not told any family member about her status since according to her, the stigma could lead her to her early grave.
One of the twins is dead and Ataa suspect he might have died from the virus. She feared for the other who is also bedridden.
