The United States warns that the proposed anti-gay bill in Ghana could have negative effects on the country’s public health and economy.

The passage of Ghana’s anti-gay bill by Parliament on February 28 has raised concerns, with US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stating that it could have detrimental effects on the country’s public health, media, civic spaces, and economy.

The bill’s approval also goes against Ghana’s long-standing tradition of tolerance, peace, and respect for human rights. Miller called for a review of the bill to ensure the protection of all individuals’ rights in Ghana. The legislation, if enacted, would not only threaten the freedoms of speech, press, and assembly for all Ghanaians but also harm the country’s economic growth and stability. The US urges a reconsideration of the bill to uphold Ghana’s values of inclusivity and human rights.

The United States is deeply troubled by the potential impact of this legislation on the LGBTQI+ community in Ghana, as well as on the broader society. Criminalizing individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity not only violates their fundamental human rights but also sets a dangerous precedent for discrimination and persecution.

Furthermore, the bill’s provisions requiring individuals to report on others who identify as LGBTQI+ could create a culture of fear and surveillance within communities, eroding trust and social cohesion. This goes against the principles of respect, tolerance, and inclusivity that are essential for a thriving and harmonious society.

Ghana must uphold its commitment to human rights, equality, and dignity for all its citizens. The United States stands ready to support efforts to promote and protect the rights of all individuals in Ghana, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We urge the Ghanaian authorities to reconsider this legislation and ensure that it aligns with international human rights standards and values of equality and non-discrimination.

Now the question is are you in support of the passage of the Anti-gay bill?
